In our lab, we discuss about the philosophy behind the experiment, academic career, and life.
Starting of anything new is always exciting and fun. It is true about a new research project. At the beginning, it is all about possibility. As we progress through the time, we hit many roadblocks and it seems the same project is all about problem. It feels like pushing a giant stone everyday and there is no visible progress. We feel like giving up everyday. But, remember - although the giant stone you are pushing is not going anywhere, you will find shortly that the effort made you competent for many other things. You become capable to move many smaller stones.
The success in academia depends a lot on writing paper and grant proposal. Often time, we put the writing task aside for the summer or the semester break. As time approaches, we realize that summer or semester break is not the best time or we do not have time to finish writing.
The best approach is to make writing a habit. Since my grad school life, I found 90/90/1 rule (a productivity technique introduced by Robin Sharma) very useful. I focus on reading and writing in the very first 90 minutes of each morning for next 90 days to accomplish 1 writing project. Trust me, it never took me 90 days to reach the goal.
